Documents Needed to Sell a Car in Ontario

Exact requirements can depend on whether the buyer is an individual, registered dealer or another business. Confirm the final requirements before signing.

Vehicle ownership permit

Complete and sign the required transfer section of the vehicle portion of the Ontario permit.

Do not hand over your licence plates. Ontario plates remain with the seller.

Bill of sale

The bill of sale should identify the buyer, seller, vehicle, purchase price and date. Both sides should keep a copy.

Ontario says private sellers are generally legally required to provide a UVIP when selling a pre-owned vehicle. Some transactions have exemptions.
