How to Sell a Used Car in Ontario

Whether you sell privately or directly to a vehicle buyer, prepare accurate information, agree on condition and price, and complete the paperwork carefully.

Reviewed July 2026Approximately 5 minutes

1. Collect accurate vehicle information

Write down the year, make, model, trim, VIN and current kilometres. Gather maintenance records, lien information and repair estimates you already have.

Photograph the exterior, interior, dashboard and known damage. Clear information reduces misunderstandings.

2. Decide how you want to sell

A private listing may produce more money but usually requires advertising, messages, viewings, test drives and negotiation.

A direct buyer may be more convenient when speed and simplicity matter. Compare the actual offer, payment method, collection terms and paperwork.

3. Prepare Ontario paperwork

Ontario says sellers are generally required to provide a Used Vehicle Information Package for a private pre-owned vehicle sale. Confirm whether it applies to your transaction.

Complete the required seller portion of the permit and keep copies of the signed sale documents.

  • Used Vehicle Information Package when required
  • Completed and signed bill of sale
  • Vehicle portion of the Ontario permit
  • Your own copy of the transaction record

4. Remove plates and personal property

Ontario licence plates remain with the seller. Remove plates, toll transponders, parking passes, documents and connected-phone data.

Follow ServiceOntario’s current instructions for updating the vehicle status and managing your plates.
